Sri Lanka targets UK market to boost export earnings through Expo 2027
Sri Lanka is stepping up efforts to expand export earnings and attract investment from the United Kingdom, using Sri Lanka Expo 2027 as a key platform to strengthen trade partnerships and secure new business opportunities.
The Export Development Board (EDB), in collaboration with the Sri Lanka High Commission in the UK, conducted a two-day business outreach programme in London on October 21 and 22, bringing together around 140 British buyers, investors and business representatives to promote the Expo and explore commercial partnerships.
Addressing the Business and Investment Forum, Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe highlighted Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, with the economy recording 5% growth in both 2024 and 2025. He emphasised the Government’s commitment to improving the business environment, streamlining regulations and strengthening investor confidence.
EDB Chairman and CEO Mangala Wijesinghe highlighted Sri Lanka’s export potential in the UK market, stressing the country’s strengths in sustainable manufacturing, quality products and reliable sourcing. He invited British businesses to use the Expo to establish direct links with Sri Lankan exporters and explore new sourcing opportunities.
The forum also examined opportunities under the UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme, which offers preferential market access for eligible Sri Lankan exports.
Sri Lanka Expo 2027, scheduled for January 14–17, will bring together exporters, manufacturers, service providers and investment promotion agencies to connect with international buyers and investors.
The initiative is expected to help Sri Lankan businesses secure new markets, expand export orders and generate much-needed foreign exchange, reinforcing exports as a vital driver of economic growth and external-sector stability.
