Hayleys Solar Advances Sri Lanka’s Renewable Energy Ambitions with 5MW Ground-Mounted Solar Development in Kosgama
Hayleys Solar, the solar energy arm of Hayleys Fentons Limited, inaugurated two ground-mounted solar power projects in Kosgama. Comprising Kosgama I (2MW) and Kosgama II (3MW), the projects represent the second phase of Hayleys Solar’s planned 300MW ground-mounted solar portfolio. Equipped with 10,790 high-efficiency 640W solar panels, the installations are expected to generate approximately 9.9 million kWh of clean electricity annually, avoiding an estimated 6,930 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
Conventional machinery access was restricted across sections of the site, necessitating labour-intensive activities, including manual drilling and foundation preparation. Through careful planning and site-specific engineering solutions, Hayleys Solar successfully executed the development while preserving the land’s natural contours and existing water drainage patterns.

The development forms part of Hayleys Group’s broader commitment to purpose-led growth, guided by its Lifecode ESG framework. As Sri Lanka works towards its target of 70% renewable electricity by 2030, Hayleys Solar is contributing utility-scale capacity to the national grid, building on its Veyangoda project under the planned 300MW ground-mounted portfolio. The Hayleys Group’s own operations already source around 70% of their energy from renewable sources.
Hasith Prematillake, Managing Director of Hayleys Fentons Limited, commented: “The Kosgama projects reflect our commitment to turning complex engineering challenges into opportunities for sustainable development. Beyond clean energy generation, our ‘Hive for the Future’ initiative brings an important community engagement dimension to the development through beekeeping activities that support biodiversity while creating livelihood opportunities for local communities. By promoting beekeeping and supporting pollinator conservation, the initiative demonstrates our commitment to delivering renewable energy projects that generate lasting environmental and social value.”

Roshane Perera, Deputy Managing Director – Energy, Hayleys Fentons Limited, added: “Unlike conventional ground-mounted installations, the Kosgama projects demanded a highly customised engineering approach. From manual foundation works to adapting installation methods to the site’s natural topography, our teams overcame considerable technical challenges without altering existing natural drainage patterns.”
The Kosgama projects further reinforce Hayleys Solar’s engineering capabilities and commitment to advancing sustainable renewable energy development across Sri Lanka.
