Sri Lanka apparel export earnings drop by 7.4% in August
Earnings from Sri Lankan apparel exports declined by 7.4% in August 2026 compared to the corresponding month in the previous year.
Central Bank of Sri Lanka export figures revealed that earnings fell to 434.8 million US dollars in August 2026, down from 469.6 million US dollars recorded in August 2025.
Cumulative apparel export earnings for the first eight months of 2026 amounted to 3,108.3 million US dollars.
This reflects a 6.3% contraction compared to the 3,318.1 million US dollars generated during the same period in 2025.
Overall textile and apparel exports experienced an 8.4% drop in August, alongside a 6.7% decline across the January-August period.
The performance underscores ongoing challenges confronting the island’s primary foreign exchange-earning sector.
