Sri Lanka seeks bigger share of India’s gem and jewellery market

Sri Lanka is stepping up efforts to expand its gem and jewellery exports to India through a high-level business delegation aimed at strengthening bilateral trade, investment and industry partnerships.

Organised by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), with the support of the Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi and Consulate in Mumbai, the delegation is visiting India from August 8 to 13, bringing together senior officials, industry associations and leading gem and jewellery companies.

The delegation includes the Chairmen of the EDB and National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA), officials and representatives of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association, Lanka Gem Dealers & Miners Association and Ceylon Gem & Jewellery Traders Association, along with several Sri Lankan companies. On August 8 and 9, the delegation participated in the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) in Mumbai, engaging with leading buyers, manufacturers, traders and other industry stakeholders.

The programme subsequently moved into a series of trade and investment promotion meetings with major Indian chambers, including the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Maharashtra Chambers of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture. EDB Chairman highlighted opportunities for increased sourcing, partnerships, investment and business collaborations between Sri Lankan and Indian companies, while also promoting Sri Lanka Expo 2027, scheduled to be held from January 14 to 17 at BMICH, Colombo.

NGJA Chairman highlighted Sri Lanka’s globally recognised natural gemstones, skilled craftsmanship and industry expertise, while inviting Indian investors to explore partnerships and investment opportunities in the sector. Sri Lankan companies participating in the delegation also presented their products, capabilities and areas of business interest, promoting the country as a premium destination for ethically sourced gemstones and value-added jewellery.

The programme also seeks to promote major Sri Lankan industry events, including Gem City Rathnapura, FACETS 2027 and Gem Sri Lanka. Further business engagements are scheduled with the World Trade Centre Mumbai, All India Association of Industries, International Chamber of Investment and Business, and Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries & Agriculture, Pune.

The EDB said the initiative forms part of Sri Lanka’s broader strategy to expand export markets, attract investment and build international momentum towards Sri Lanka Expo 2027.
