SLAM Power Solutions Deploys Smart Microgrid at Faculty of Engineering University of Peradeniya to Power Critical Infrastructure

Power Solutions officially commissioned a state-of-the-art microgrid system at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. The initiative addresses long-standing grid instability concerns, providing uninterrupted power for the faculty’s computer laboratories and high-demand artificial intelligence (AI) servers.

Conventional backup UPS systems provided only a few minutes of power during grid outages, while traditional diesel generators faced operational risks, high costs, and fuel availability constraints. Under the vision of Prof. Lilantha Samaranayake – Dean, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, to foster sustainable engineering solutions, the project successfully bridges critical backup power needs with clean energy.

SLAM Power Solutions executed the project by retrofitting an existing, non-functional 60 kW solar PV system installed more than 10 years ago and integrating a 100 kWh BSLBATT Lithium-Ion battery storage system. The microgrid is powered by Victron Energy inverter-chargers from the Netherlands and incorporates UK-based Shelly Automation systems for intelligent lighting and automated load management.

The project was funded by the E72-75 batch of Faculty of Engineering University of Peradeniya, to have a reliable power supply to the labs and as an initiative to bringing exposure to new technologies for future engineers of the University.

Chief Guest Prof. Terrence Madhujith – Vice Chancellor of University of Peradeniya, Guest of honor Prof. Wijendra Bandara – Chairman of Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, Dr. Sunil De Silva with other representatives from E72-75 batch, along with representatives from National System Operator (NSO), Industry Experts and Academic Staff participated in the project launch ceremony.

In addition to securing mission-critical IT infrastructure, the project serves as an active educational laboratory where engineering students gain direct exposure to advanced renewable energy storage, automation, and microgrid design.
